The Netherlands and Europe want to have a fully circular economy by 2050. We all know the hypothetical examples: a protein-rich waste stream of the dairy industry can potentially be used in the food industry for the production of functional foods; organic waste from farms can be converted into chemical building blocks to synthesize paints, coatings and plastics; and CO2 can be captured and converted into fuels and chemicals.
Membranes are an energy efficient, highly versatile separation technology. It is precisely this versatility that is essential in the transition to a circular, sustainable society: Many industrial rest streams have a very complex composition and separation is essential to valorize such streams. During this lecture she will discuss how we can tailor the structure, morphology and functionality of membranes to control the separation performance such that such membranes can be used in the separation of rest streams for reuse.
