By using digital networks logistics companies can reduce CO2 emissions by about 22%
This was found by the FENIX research project, which established a new way for logistics companies to share data. Even big shippers are now thinking about how to make their logistics processes greener in the future.
A novel digital logistics network
The EU funded research project aimed to help transport and logistics companies share information and data more easily. A novel digital logistics network lets these companies use existing transport networks more efficiently and reduce their CO2 emissions. The developed network is a technical and regulatory environment for data sharing between different platforms. In the project 48 partners worked on 11 pilot projects along major transport corridors in Europe. The results showed that CO2 emissions were reduced by more than 22 percent on average because of the project.
TU/e’s Information Systems group TU/e was responsible for the development and evaluation of a prototype 'connector' for information exchange about truck capacity, which was implemented by our partners from practice in the project. Fred Westdijk, CEO of Jan de Rijk Logistics, emphasizes the importance of networking: "Intermodal transportation is very important to achieving our environmental goals. And linking our APS with that of our suppliers is essential to making this work."
