The universities in Utrecht and Eindhoven are both hosting a considerable expertise in various fields related to porous media. These fields include the

• formation of porous media (growth, sedimentation, etc.),
• deformation of, and stress in, porous media,
• fractures in porous media,
• anisotropic and multiphase flow through porous media,
• anisotropic diffusion in porous media, and
• surface effects (e.g. wettability and capillarity) and transformations (e.g. reactions) in porous media.

These topics are relevant to different disciplines active within the industry and within our universities, ranging from mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology to geosciences, building physics, and sustainable energy technology.

To group the scattered expertise into one common initiative, we have organized a joint meeting for two days in Eindhoven, sponsored by the Eindhoven Multiscale Institute (EMI). In this meeting, we will bring together groups from both universities. The aim is twofold:

1. through this meeting the porous media-related research of each group is made known to the other  groups, and
2. this meeting is intended to lead to an active collaboration in research and education, expressed through joint projects and programmes, attracting external funding and industrial partners.

During the meeting, different academic groups from Utrecht and Eindhoven will showcase a topic from their research. Three keynote lectures will be delivered by Mattias Schmidt (Procter & Gamble), Steffen Berg (Shell) and Stephen Cowin (City College, New York) to highlight the relevance of porous media research in industry and academia. Interaction between groups and ideas for the formation of joint proposals will be stimulated through a “work-dinner” in the evening of Monday January 14, offered by EMI.
