This course deals with the failure phenomena that may occur in materials in short-term (impact) or long-term (static or cyclic fatigue) loading. We will focus on mechanically induced failure, and will distinguish between ductile failure modes, i.e. controlled by plasticity, and brittle failure modes, governed by governed by crack growth; the domain of fracture mechanics.

The fundamentals of both failure regimes will be covered, for polymers and metals, and the main methods to predict the materials response will be introduced and demonstrated.

The main body of the course will be formed by 28 hours of lectures (4 per week). Additionally there will be a number of Capita Selecta presentations from industry to show the relevance for industrial practice. 

The course will be completed with a BZ (total 20 hrs) in which the students will work in small teams and apply the theory presented on selected design problems. The results will be graded and count for 30% of the final mark. The rest can be obtained in a written exam.
