Surface quality is an important property for the newest products. Therefore, a high scratch resistance is required for these product. This can only be achieved by fully understanding the scratch behaviour of polymers. Strain hardening is one of the characteristics of the behaviour of polymers. The influence of strain hardening on the scratch response is investigated in this study. The influence of strain hardening is investigated by comparing experimental results with numerical simulations.
Experimentally, the strain hardening is manipulated by changing the composition of blends of polystyrene (PS) and poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO). In the simulations, the strain hardening is varied by changing the strain hardening modulus in de Eindhoven Glassy Polymer model (EGP-model). Frictionless simulations give some first insight in the scratch response. Including friction in the scratch simulations enables drawing quantitative conclusion about the effect of strain hardening on the scratch response. Next to the investigation of the effect of strain hardening on a ductile scratch, the effect of strain hardening on the onset of wear is investigated.
