Contents

In this course the most important numerical techniques for performing stable simulations of the flow of viscolastic fluids are presented. After a short review of the basic equations from continuum mechanics and rheology some standard numerical techniques are introduced, such as the finite element method, mixed methods, upwinding techniques (SUPG). Subsequently some stabilisation techniques, especially designed for viscoelastic fluid flow are presented, such as EVSS, DEVSS,DEVSS-G and the log-conformation method. The various methods will be applied to some benchmark problems.

Learning objectives

To acquire knowledge and insight in the most important numerical methods that are available for simulation of viscoelastic fluid flows.
