Symposium and Director of the Center for Care & Cure Technology, Maarten Paulides was the first to take the floor for a research-oriented talk. Professor Paul Boon, affiliated to Ghent University and Kempenhaeghe demonstrated during his talk the wide variety of brain stimulation treatments available on the market today. After a short break, Elles Raaijmakers gave an inspiring overview on the development of ideas surrounding the origin of thoughts, followed by Dr. Jeannette Lorteije, of the Amsterdam University who gave an in-depth view on optogenetics. The afternoon continued with an inspiring talk from Dr. Regina Luttge on her ERC-starting grant project on the first brain-on-a –chip devices. The scientific part of the symposium was closed with a very impressive talk from by PdEng Edoardo Paoles from GTX Medical, a company developing implants to enable paraplegic patients to restore their ability to walk. The afterwards drinks were used to discuss the many views on brain and nerve stimulation with the speakers, while enjoying the most popular brain stimulant in the world.
