Turbulent reacting flow multi-scale modeling: from high-performance computing to process control tools
The objectives and challenges of reactive flow modeling are summarized in introduction, with an overview of strategies and methods to simulate flames and practical burners. Then, a specific sub-grid scale modeling approach to perform Large Eddy Simulation (LES) of turbulent premixed combustion is introduced and applications are presented. In a second time, to address large-scale and multi-physics industrial systems with highly resolved simulations, including multicomponent spray evaporation and chemical reactions, a non-linear downsizing procedure is discussed to construct a numerical lab-model, which preserves characteristic spray and flame numbers. The method is first validated using Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) and applied to Large Eddy Simulation of a DeNOx selective non-catalytic reduction (SNCR) industrial system. Finally, it is demonstrated how a low-order stochastic model, running on a smartphone, can be derived from Large Eddy Simulation, in order to control the full DeNOx system in situ.
