RESEARCH PROFILE

Kaidong Chen is now a Doctoral Candidate of the Dynamics and Control (D&C) group in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). Kaidong is co-supervised by Professor Nathan van de Wouw and Professor Emmanuel Detournay (University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, USA). His current research focuses on the modeling and analysis of the self-excited vibrations of drilling/milling systems. Conventionally, these cutting processes were described by delay differential equations (DDE), where the computation of the chip thickness was highly simplified. The aim of Kaidong's research is to establish a more precise mathematical formulation of the aforementioned cutting processes, based on which their stability characteristic can be analyzed.

Mechanics is an art of modeling

ACADEMIC BACKGROUND

Kaidong Chen obtained his B.Eng. degree in Engineering Mechanics from Beihang University (China) in 2017 and the MSc. degree in Mechanics from Tsinghua University (China) in 2020. Before joining the Dynamics and Control (D&C) group of Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in 2022, Kaidong worked remotely as a Ph.D. student at University of Minnesota, Twin Cities (USA).
