Transitioning between micro- and macrolevel is a learning aim of the chemistry education. Students of the teacher training major looked into the usage of visual puzzles in order to stimulate this back-and-forth thinking. The puzzles were based on the traditional ‘find the differences’ puzzles in which the player has to find the differences between two images. Several images of acids and bases (see image below) were presented to the students in which the differences were also chemical mistakes. Students looked for the differences between the images and explained the mistakes that were made. Two parallel classes VWO5 were involved in this research. The class that did the puzzles, did significantly better on the higher ranked assignments of the exam.

Organization
Target group: chemistry teachers. Minimum number of participants: 4, maximum of 15.
Course load: 3 hours, You’ll receive a certificate regarding the jobs in education law.
Date and time: Monday, October 17th, 2-5 pm.
Costs: €25 per person
