I’m developing a machine learning algorithm to learn occupants’ thermal perception and adjust the settings of the personal environment control system (PECS) automatically. In short, PECS will create an ideal individual microclimate based on occupant’s needs with the least intervention.

More than 30% of total energy produced in the Netherlands is consumed by built environment. 50% of that is used by HVAC systems in buildings. However, research shows that the overall thermal comfort of occupants is quite low. Therefore, conventional HVAC systems are deemed to be inefficient. PECSs can improve the thermal comfort significantly while reducing the overall energy usage.

I believe achieving my project objectives is a major step towards commercializing PECSs. This is why I joined the EngD program. I get to use engineering, IT, and entrepreneurial skills I’ve gathered over the years working in the industry to make an impact that matters in the march towards sustainability.
