FAQ

Internationals. Where can I find more information for international students?

Internationals can pose all of their questions to: io@tue.nl

Housing. Do you have any tips on how I can find accommodation?

Definitely. There are several options for arranging housing.

  • You can become a member of Facebook groups that feature many ads for houses and student rooms.
  • You can search the private sector yourself.
  • You can register at Vestide, a housing organization that can help you find a room.
  • As an international, you will receive confirmation of enrollment in May and can then indicate that you would like to be kept up to date by the housing service. A very limited number of rooms are offered through this service. As an international, you are only eligible if you return the confirmation statement on time and if the deposit (if applicable) is paid.

Admission. What criteria do you need to meet if you want to be admitted to the Industrial Engineering program?

If you have a high school certificate with Mathematics B and English, you are immediately admissible. The program has no numerus fixus.

Admission. Do you need a certain grade for your Mathematics B and English?

You do not need a minimum grade. A certificate at the high school level is sufficient.

Admission. What about physics?

You do not need physics to be admitted to the program. However, the theory and thinking that you learn in high school physics can make some courses a little easier for you. This is especially true if you want to take certain courses at other departments in your elective space.

Admission. Can I submit my proof of English and Mathematics B after the May 1 enrollment deadline?

Yes, you can. At the time of enrollment, you do not need to have a diploma or certificate. After enrollment, you will receive all additional information and deadlines.

Admission. Where can I find more information on this topic?

The following website provides more information on the steps that you need to follow: https://www.tue.nl/en/education/become-a-tue-student/admission-and-enrollment/programtype/bachelor-1/program/industrial-engineering

Program. What makes this degree an engineering program?

During your studies, you will learn how to solve realistic problems in a mathematical, analytical manner through simulation and analysis. The scientific knowledge that you gain will contribute to this.

Program. What do the technical courses entail?

As an industrial engineer, you make choices in business operations and try to predict all kinds of phenomena using mathematics and programming. Not just the weather, traffic congestion or how heavy the foundation of a building should be; you can also model business processes. This is primarily what takes place in Industrial Engineering. By changing small things in a structured and controlled way, it becomes clear what effects the changes have on the outcome. In this way, you can optimize processes but also design new processes for which you can predict the outcome in advance. Rather than trial and error, you make informed choices or decisions based on known theories.

Using mathematics, you learn not only the basic theories needed to create such models but also how to think and work in a systematic and structured manner.

Program. Which mathematical (high school) techniques are used in Industrial Engineering?

Much of the Mathematics B that you learned in high school will be revisited at university in certain contexts. You can expect algebraic skills, functions, graphs, differentiation and integration, among others. In addition, statistics and the associated probability calculations play a large role within the program. You will recognize this if you took Mathematics D in high school, although Mathematics D is not a requirement of the degree.

Program. Is everything in English?

Yes, all lectures, communication and tests are in English. An English-language degree broadens your cultural and social knowledge. Furthermore, you will improve your command of the English language. With a high school diploma, you have the right level of English to follow the degree.

Program. Can you view the year agenda of Eindhoven University of Technology somewhere?

Yes, you can always access this via the digital education guide:

Academic year agenda (tue.nl)

Program. What is the relationship between theory and practice?

During each quartile (10-week period), you follow three courses. A large majority of the courses offer group assignments. These are projects in which you apply your theory to a (fictitious) assignment. The share of these assignments in the final grade varies per course.

Program. What is the difference between Industrial Engineering and ‘regular’ business administration?

Industrial Engineering is an engineering degree with an emphasis on modeling, analyzing, organizing, calculating and designing (= setting up) business processes.
Business administration is a management degree that emphasizes the operation and management of businesses.

Program. After completing this bachelor’s degree, do you have automatic access to any engineering-related master’s degree?

Completion of the Industrial Engineering bachelor’s degree gives you direct access to the following master’s degrees:

  • Operations, Management and Logistics
  • Innovation Management

If you want to pursue a master’s degree at another department, you will need to take some courses from the corresponding bachelor’s degree. If you decide this early on, you can already take these courses during your bachelor’s.

Program. How realistic is it to choose a dual degree bachelor’s program?

Each year, several students choose a bachelor’s dual degree. Generally, these students require an extra year. You then complete two bachelor’s degrees in four years. Some students fill out their elective space with courses from another bachelor’s programs.

Program. What are the options for studying abroad or an exchange program?

During the bachelor’s, there is no option for studying abroad. However, this is possible if you pursue a subsequent master’s degree at the university.

TU/e. Are there many activities and facilities at the university?

Yes! Besides the study association (with a bar on campus), there are more than 60 student associations in Eindhoven, all of which provide many activities on and around the campus.

The university also has a cinema, supermarket, restaurants and sports center, among other things. With a sports card from the sports center, you can do a variety of sports. Additionally, you can do just about any sport you can think of at the student sports clubs. Examples include swimming, bouldering, squash, pole fitness, rugby, hockey, budo, surfing and golf. The sports center has 38 different student sports clubs.

TU/e. In the Netherlands, what is the difference between a three-year and a four-year bachelor’s degree?

In the Netherlands, the main difference is that the three-year program is offered at universities and, upon completion, graduates receive the title of BSc ir. The four-year program is offered at universities of applied science (HBO) and, upon graduation, students are entitled to use the title of B Eng ing.

TU/e. How long does it take to get from the campus to the center of Eindhoven? What means of transport do you recommend?

From campus, you can get to the center in 10-15 minutes on foot or five minutes by bike. With a bicycle, you can access all major locations in the city quickly and easily. You can reach the train station in about 10 minutes on foot.
