Robotics

Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) pushes the frontier of robotics technologies in its many fields of expertise and applications. TU/e aims to positively impact our societal challenges in health-care, energy, mobility and food.

Robot systems like manipulators, mobile robots, autonomous cars, surgical systems etc. are a combination of many technologies and fields of expertise. Our research extends to many of those and includes expertise in autonomy, control systems, locomotion, mechatronics, artificial intelligence (machine learning / deep learning), material sciences, electronics, computer sciences, design and user interfacing. It also encompasses less robot-centric expertise like the design of robot based system level factory solutions, its embedding in organizations and the study of its impact on we as humans and our society.

HERO, serving drinks and more!

Robots take over more and more of our everyday tasks, but why don’t they perform actual jobs in healthcare yet? Find out how HERO, our prize-winning service robot, learns to navigate the world of humans.

HERO was developed by TechUnited, a multidisciplinary team of (old) students, PhD’s and other researchers at TU/e involved in the development of robotics. Find out more here.

Robotics at a glance

Eindhoven University of Technology has a leading expertise in the field of robotics. This is expressed in many real world applications that range from autonomous cars to harvesting vegetables and from surgery robot to construction building systems. It has an active community of 100+ researchers spread over 20 research groups, a dozen award winning student teams, a same amount of laboratories, 6 recent start ups, one research center (High Tech Systems Center) and the TU/e AI Systems Institute (EAISI) that works to connect and foster multi-disciplinary research in collaboration with industry and other academic partners.

Robot icons

Eindhoven University of Technology has as many as 20 research groups and 5 students teams working on robotics technologies.

Accelerated by the university’s active student team societies, these technologies are taken to higher technical readiness levels (TRL) and sometimes participate in international competitions like RoboCup and Formula Student Racing. Some of these demonstrators have become university icons that perfectly demonstrate our expertise in the different robotics field.

Industry collaboration

Eindhoven University of Technology is ranked 2nd in the world when it comes to industry collaboration (Leiden CWTS 2020).

Unique for the Eindhoven region is its level of collaboration between companies (e.g. Philips, ASML, NXP, DAF, Vanderlande) and knowledge institutes. Its explorative and collaborative nature is key to its success. TU/e has collaboration experience with companies from different maturity levels; corporates to startups.

Interested in what the collaboration could mean for you? Program managers at our research centers (High Tech Systems Center, Center for Humans & Technology) and AI institute (Eindhoven AI Systems Institute) ensure that you will find the right expertise you’re looking for and can guide you in the process towards collaboration.
