Multidisciplinary, application-oriented research into wireless technologies

The CWTe is a collaboration of five research groups of the Electrical Engineering department of Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e): Electromagnetics (EM), Integrated Circuits (IC), Signal Processing Systems (SPS), Electronic Systems (ES) and Electro-optical Communication (ECO). We focus on four programs: Ultra-High Data-Rate Systems, Ultra-Low Power and Internet-of-Things Communication, Terahertz Technology, and Radio Astronomy.

Smart antennas: creating fast 5G connections with databeams

Are you ready for the superfast 5G network? Watch this video to see the new, smart antennas TU/e develops to realize this massive increase in capacity. TU/e not only focuses on the development of antennas, electronics and algorithms, but also on creating measuring devices for lab- and field tests and viability studies in collaboration with industry. Making sure this smart network will be feasible, safe and affordable.

All-in-one for wireless communication

The CWTe integrates various laboratories designed for research on wireless antennas covering an area of 700 square meters: from near-field scanning (the testing of antennas in a small space), to the testing of new chips on wafers. The facilities include a fully shielded metal room in which the most sensitive electronics can be measured. In a system integration lab, chips can be linked to other components. In particular, the combination of the various laboratories and the clustering of the associated expertise in one place make the CWTe unique in Europe.

The CWTe laboratories are fitted with a traditional anechoic chamber of 28m² that facilitates antenna measurements from 500MHz till 40GHz. Next to classical far-field measurements it also supports planar near-field measurements of large connectorised antenna systems up till 90GHz.

Partnering with CWTe

The synergy of fundamental science and industrial application could generate substantial gains for partners collaborating within the Center for Wireless Technology. Such a collaborative approach ensures that the scientific research keeps a focus on the various technological, economic and regulatory demands that influence the application framework. The outcome is a virtuous circle whereby science and application reinforce and enhance each other. There are three levels of CWTe participation.

Listening to signals coming from space

“The thirty million from Minister Van Engelshoven guarantees that we can participate in building an international project that we ourselves initiated,” says Mark Bentum, TU/e professor of Radio Science. Last week in her science letter to the Lower House, the Minister of Education, Culture and Science (OCW) stated her intention to invest in the construction of the world's largest radio telescope. What makes this telescope so special, what purpose is it being built to serve and what role will the Netherlands be playing? Read more

For international students

With the launch of the MOOC Microwave Engineering and Antennas in 2020 the new 'MicroMasters Wireless Technologies' program was introduced. This program consists of two online master courses, the second  RF and millimeter-Wave Circuit Design has been launched in 2021.

The MicroMasters provide international students the opportunity to gain expertise in the fast developing area of 5G and 6G wireless communications. In addition, they can obtain 15 educational credits (ECTS). These credits can be used in the future when students start their Master at TU/e in Electrical Engineering. The development of the MicroMasters is funded/supported by the BOOST program of TU/e.

TU/e is the first University in The Netherlands to offer this opportunity to international top talent.
