Our research community covers the entire range of disciplines related to the built environment. By bringing multiple perspectives to the table and meaningly connecting these, we are able to contribute to innovative solutions for complex societal issues.
By playing an active role in our academic network and by committing to Open Science principles, we contribute to the advancement of scientific knowledge.
We have world class experimental facilities, such as a fully equipped building physics, materials and structures laboratories, a largescale 3D Concrete Printer and Atmospheric Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel, as well as digital twinning and virtual reality facilities. This allows us to do laboratory experimental research from microscopic level to full-scale, from controlled laboratory conditions to field studies involving users, and everything in between.
In collaboration with the TU/e institutes EAISI and EIRES we develop Key Enabling Technologies in the field of artificial intelligence and the energy transition.
Our research programs
Artificial Intelligence in the Built Environment
Our built environment has a huge impact on all aspects of our lives, not in the least quality of life and climate change. As an effect, huge potential resides in digitizing this industry and making data available for intelligent management and optimization of our environment (acoustic performance checking, sensor-based building management, IoT-enabled construction sites, etc.). Various Artificial Intelligence techniques are investigated and adopted in the department of the Built Environment and used for improving the quality of our built environment.
Energy Transition
The future energy system will be drastically different from the current energy system. This has an enormous impact on local governments, system operators, energy producers, home-owners and housing corporations and industry.
In order to make the right decisions at the start of this energy transition, a comprehensive and integrated evaluation of the consequences and potential of future scenarios of the renewable energy system in the built environment is indispensable. Therefore, we are developing a collaborative ecosystem of stakeholders that are actively involved in the decision-making and/or implementation processes of the energy transition at a local, city and regional scale, to build a strong foundation for the long-term planning of the future energy system in the built environment.
